Background
An international conference examines the tropical forest as an object of measurement, technology, power and money. Its visual identity, poster and programme provide the structure for this exploration over two days of debate. Tropical forests are a focal point for financial, technological and intellectual resources: measuring carbon stocks, monitoring deforestation, and funding conservation. They remain under threat from infrastructure, agriculture, mining and climate change. On 21 and 22 May 2026, anthropologists, specialists in the study of science and technology, and historians of science will gather in Paris to compare how these forests are governed, measured and understood.
Issues
- To give form to an object that the participants will deconstruct. The ‘tropical forest’ is here a technopolitical object rather than a landscape.
- To bring together the four words in the title: measurement, technology, power and money.
- To serve an international and multidisciplinary community through a programme that can be followed over two days across two venues.
